Have you ever considered why blacks were segregated from white people? Have you ever seen a person on the street who was treated differently because of their race or color? If so, then Jim Crow Law is to blame. It was one of the laws that enforced racial segregation at the end of the reconstruction in 1865. In what way did Jim Crow Law affect African American’s right to freedom and lack of education? The term Jim Crow was referred to a male character from an old song by Thomas Dartmouth. Racism appealed to the white people and feared that the blacks were going to take over, they tried many ways to prevent them from doing so. I chose this topic because it can fit my understanding and easier to earn more knowledge about the topic. The sources I chose were a story of Nobuo Honda’s experience with discrimination ad other 2 primary sources that explain how education was important to black people because it can affect their future job and wages. There are tons of available resources about my topic which also made it easier for me to conduct research. I tried to pick the most reliable and trusted ones. There were a lot of od stories about the period of time, it explains different experiences with different people. Under the law, African Americans, was "separate but equal" in many public places, such as transportation? I once read this story during my history class in high school, Nobuo Honda, and his encounter with segregation in the south. Honda was new to the United States, when he rode a bus he sat all the way at the back, but when the bus was filling up, the bus driver told him to sit in front, "When I reached the bus driver he pointed to a seat up toward the front and said Soldier you sit here". This shows that back then, African American were separated from the white. They had different rules and regulations and people were divided into racial groups. There never got a higher role than the whites and were treated unfairly. They felt inferior, there was no association or connection between the two groups. It banned the interaction marriage, between the two races. They accepted their lives as it was knowing the issue won't be solved. Therefore, it was Honda's first introduction to Jim Crow Law. There were signs in different directions for white and black people. For example in this image, we can see a bathroom sign that says whites are on the left ad blacks on the white. Even though they were equal but they were still separate. Both whites and blacks don’t use the same objects or facilities. Black receive different wages than whites. After analyzing school quality, they discovered the black public schools lacked resources and limited student skills. Having skills is one of the important requirements that is needed for African Americans in order to get a job, and while many of them are still segregated or living in poverty. According to Carruthers and Wanamaker's findings, "Education quality would have been a powerful tool for raising black economic standing in the South," if the blacks were given an opportunity to have a better education, then they would have gotten better jobs and higher wages. Segregation by Jim Crow Law meant that black lacked resources and limited skills, which set the kids at different education levels, that's why black men had limited jobs, In the early days of the Civil War, life for freedmen and women was horrifying. We are all humans and deserve to be treated equally, whether we are black or white. Many people are still facing discrimination and violence today. Most of them are in suburban areas, where they lack resources, education, and mental health. Spreading awareness about the issue will at least make an impact on the people still suffering from discrimination. It all started with slavery where they were segregated from the whites. There are several personal stories about people's experiences with Jim Crow Law. Understanding the challenge’s color people are facing in early childhood education is the most important aspect of their lives, blacks will continue their education despite their conditions. Jim Crow Law had affected almost all the African American population. Many people might not know about this issue or they haven’t fully understood it. It’s important to spread awareness and educate people. The risks African Americans took to improve their lives and the violence they have faced. This too many years to improve. However, this is still one of the ongoing issues in this world. Jim Crow Law still has an impact today.

1. What do you notice? What do you wonder? The first thing that got my attention is the questions, “Do you Believe”. I felt that I needed to give my opinion on a matter, especially when it mentioned that it was associated with the advancement of colored people. We know that black people were fighting for their rights, such as voting, and education. As I go further in the details of the source, I got interested to learn more about the matter. How different were the colored people from the white? What was the purpose of the organization? 2. Source: The source seems to be an advertisement, It was written in 1919 in New York. It mentions that if we agree with the advancement of colored people and their rights, then we should apply to be a member of the organization to fight democracy that implies for negro. The goal is to get 100,000 members, by June 1st they have already got 57,000 members. They are trying to encourage people to join the organization. There will also be a payment of membership to being one year in the organization. https://transcription.si.edu/view/22594/NMAAHC-2012_84_3_002 3. Context: In module 9, We can see that the Jim Crow Law would be one of the examples that have affected Blacks. The law has created legal separation and segregation. The rules were enforced even if violence was necessary. Blacks were to demonstrate their subordination, while the whites demonstrated white supremacy, they had control and were dominant. Blacks were treated differently and were expected to follow the social norms that were set. This issue has existed in every part of their life. As it was mentioned in Module 14, WW1 was an opportunity for the blacks to prove themselves that they are worthy and are capable as much as the whites. The US army uniform the blacks wore represents authority, power, and respect. However, it was viewed as a threat to southern whites. https://maryklann.wixsite.com/hist110/post/module-9-race-and-violence-in-the-new-south https://maryklann.wixsite.com/hist110/post/module-14-world-war-i 4. Implications/Conclusions: This source was important for understanding American History because despite everything that happened to the blacks and the way they were treated. They were still trying to fight and prove themselves as worthy as the whites, which the WW1 gave them this advantage. They were still asking and demanding their rights. The fact that they have created an organization and have gained a good amount of members, who share the same opinions as them. 5. Discussion Question: If you have read the advertisements back in the days. Would you have joined the organization? Why or Why not?

What do you notice? What do you wonder? The ad for my first primary source analysis was “Thomas Vaughan searching for parents”. I chose this ad because it was interesting and sad how the son was left alone without his parents who were missing at the same time. His father Isaac Fisher, and mother Fanny Bowles, were formerly slaves. This ad was made to spread information about those people and make it easier to find them or to report about them if anyone sees them. I wonder if he did find his parents later on. This ad was so old. The time period affects how information was received or given. Now, we have the technology, phone numbers, and many other ways to use to find someone. “Many formerly enslaved people (known as freedpeople) left plantations to search for family members who had been sold away. They published newspaper ads seeking information about long lost relatives”. People were trying to bring back their family together after everything that happened. I believe it was difficult and challenging to find missing people back in the days. Time/Place and Implications/Conclusions “Thomas Vaughan searching for parents” ad was released in California on February 26, 1870. Though the last time he heard from his parents was in 1861. This was during slavery and the civil war. In this time period, slavery wasn’t abolished and many black men and women tried to escape slavery in order to live freely as American cItizens. As it was mentioned in the module 2: Emancipation and Reconstruction, it was mentioned how property and citizenship were important especially for those under slavery. Children were also getting separated from their parents to eliminate the chance of them escaping. Women tried to regain the custody of their children who were taken to work for white masters. Women preferred to work hard to get their family than they did under slavery. Slavery had really a big impact on people in the time period, and how family members were separated from each other. This is why people started doing the ads in order to search for their missing members. They wanted their freedom back. Thomas Vaughan's parents disappeared when they were slaves, even after slavery was abolished there was no sign of them. Discussion question Do you think Thomas found his parents? For those who tried to reunite the family, do you think they succeeded? If you were living in that time period what would you have done?
